There were more than 300,000 HVAC technicians and installers in the United States in 2008, reports the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov). More than half of all technicians worked for plumbing, heating and air conditioning contractors. Self-employed HVAC technicians made up 16% of the industry. The median wage for HVAC technicians and installers was $19.08 per hour in 2008. HVAC installers working for the government earned the highest median hourly wage with $22.79 (www.bls.gov).
