Most HVAC technicians need six months to two years of experience before being considered fully proficient, reports the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov). Additionally, some states require heating and cooling installers to be licensed. Licensure requirements vary by state and job duties.Technicians who handle refrigerants are required to become certified in one of three categories. Type I certification deals with small appliances, Type II certification covers high-pressure refrigerants and Type III certification is required for low-pressure refrigerants. Certification exams need to be approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
